Covenant Names Dr. Thurman Williams as New Full-Time Professor of Homiletics

Covenant Seminary is pleased to announce its new full-time Professor of Homiletics, Dr. Thurman Williams. Dr. Williams has previously served as Director of Homiletics in a part-time adjunct capacity, but thanks to a newly received grant from Lilly Endowment, Dr. Williams will be joining the Seminary faculty full-time starting Spring 2024.

In addition to currently directing Covenant Seminary’s homiletics program, Dr. Williams serves as Pastor of New City Fellowship–West End, a church plant of New City Fellowship, St. Louis, planted in 2019. Prior to that, Dr. Williams served as Associate Pastor at Grace & Peace Fellowship (PCA) in St. Louis from 2013 to 2018 and was Pastor of New Song Community Church (PCA) in inner-city Baltimore from 2000 to 2013. He was previously Minister of Outreach and Youth for five years at Faith Christian Fellowship Church (PCA), also in Baltimore, and served four years on staff with the ministry of Young Life.

Thurman holds a Master of Divinity (MDiv) from Chesapeake Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry (DMin) from Covenant Theological Seminary. He has served as an Adjunct Professor of Homiletics at Covenant since 2014. Thurman has also served as Chairman of the PCA’s Mission to North America Committee. He and his wife, Evie, have been married for 26 years and have four adult children.

This appointment is the result of receiving a $1.19 million grant from Lilly Endowment toward equipping future preachers. Dr. Williams will serve as the project lead in further developing the preaching program to benefit those aspiring to pastoral ministry.

Of this new appointment, Dr. Thomas C. Gibbs, President of Covenant Seminary, said “I am very thankful that Thurman will serve in this new role. The work of preaching is central to pastoral ministry, and I can think of few better men than Thurman Williams to lead this task at Covenant Seminary. His love for the gospel and for his calling, in addition to his skill as a preacher, make him uniquely suited for this task.”

Since 1956 Covenant Seminary has prepared pastors, counselors, and ministry leaders. Located in St. Louis, Missouri, it is the denominational seminary of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), training men and women for the work of ministry to the PCA and beyond.
