Dr. W. Brian Aucker

Professor of Old Testament

Prior to embarking on theological studies, Dr. Brian Aucker worked in medicine as a nuclear medicine and MRI technologist. He came to Covenant Seminary to pursue his MDiv degree, graduating in 1996. His PhD thesis, undertaken at the University of Edinburgh, focused on the role of the prophet Elisha in 2 Kings 2–8. After completion of the degree, he served from 2001 to 2004 as a pastor at The Covenant Presbyterian Church (PCA), St. Louis, Missouri, and then taught Bible from 2004 to 2007 at Westminster Christian Academy in St. Louis. He returned to Covenant Seminary as full-time faculty in fall 2007. His passion in teaching is to help students gain a deeper appreciation for the Historical Books of the Old Testament.

With Robert Rezetko and Timothy Lim, Dr. Aucker co-edited and contributed to Reflection and Refraction: Studies in Biblical Historiography in Honour of A. Graeme Auld (Brill, 2006). For the ESV Study Bible (Crossway, 2008) he wrote the study notes for Joel, Micah, and Haggai, and served as Old Testament Consultant as well as Old Testament Charts and Timelines Consultant. He contributed study notes for the book of Judges in the Gospel Transformation Study Bible (Crossway, 2013, 2018) and devotionals for the ESV Women’s Devotional Bible (Crossway, 2014). Those devotionals are reissued in Daily Joy: a Devotional for Women (Crossway, 2022). Other academic contributions include a recently completed commentary on Ezra-Nehemiah for Crossway’s ESV Expository Commentary (2020). Current projects include commentaries on both 1 and 2 Kings for the recently launched Pillar Old Testament Commentary series.

His service at Covenant Seminary includes directing the ThM Program from 2012–2021 and continuing service on that committee. Along with several faculty, he advises and participates in the student led Theological Fellowship. He also served for several years on the board of Presbyterian Mission International (PMI).

Dr. Aucker is married to Pam, and their family includes three married children and eight grandchildren.
