Dr. Jay Sklar is Named Vice President of Academics

The president, faculty, and staff of Covenant Seminary are pleased to announce that after a thorough search the Seminary has a new Vice President of Academics. Dr. Jay Sklar, currently Professor of Old Testament and Dean of Faculty, has accepted a two-year appointment to the VPA position, effective July 1, 2017. Dr. Sklar will continue to fulfill the responsibilities of Dean of Faculty as he steps into the expanded role of chief academic officer for the Seminary. He will teach a reduced course load in Old Testament to make room for his new responsibilities.

Dr. Sklar will oversee all areas of academic administration for the Seminary and take the lead in evaluating and shepherding the search for new faculty. Dr. Sklar will also have a key role in developing the redesigned Field Education program and the relaunch of the Center for Ministry Leadership Formation, as well as the Seminary’s growing academic partnerships, such as with the school’s extension site in Nashville, Tennessee.

A native of Canada, Dr. Sklar holds a BA in philosophy from the University of Waterloo (Canada), an MDiv from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and a PhD in Old Testament Studies from the University of Gloucestershire (England). He has a keen interest in developing theological education overseas, and teaches yearly in France. In addition, he has led youth and children’s ministries in both church and camp settings and is a frequent speaker at church and college events. Dr. Sklar’s doctoral studies on the Old Testament sacrificial system resulted in the book Sin, Impurity, Sacrifice, Atonement: The Priestly Conceptions (Sheffield Phoenix Press, 2015) and his well-received commentary, Leviticus, in the Tyndale Old Testament Commentary Series (IVP, 2014). He also served as a contributor to and editor of notes on Leviticus for the ESV Study Bible. Courses he has taught or team-taught at the Seminary include Hebrew in Exegesis; The Pentateuch; Old Testament Historical Books; Psalms, Wisdom Literature, and Worship; and Covenant Theology.

Commenting on his appointment, Dr. Sklar said: “It has been an immense privilege to work at Covenant during the past sixteen years. I cannot imagine a team of faculty and staff I would rather serve among. I welcome the prayers of God’s people for wisdom and strength in this new role, as all of us at Covenant seek to steward the opportunities he has given us here to serve his church and Kingdom.”

Seminary President Dr. Mark Dalbey noted, “I am grateful that Jay was willing to be interviewed during our search process and that he has accepted this vital leadership role at Covenant. He is a humble, faithful servant of the Lord and an effective teacher and author who has emerged as a strong leader in the past few years as Dean of Faculty. Our faculty members have great respect for Jay and are thankful to have him in this position. He will play an important part in bringing the faculty’s voice to the president, the leadership team, and the Board of Trustees, which approved my appointment of Jay unanimously.”

The Seminary community praises God for his continued provision of multi-gifted leaders who can take advantage of many new opportunities to shape the future of the institution in following the mission Christ has entrusted to us. We are grateful that Dr. Sklar will now be an even more significant part of that team.
