I think every Christian believer in the world would acknowledge gladly that Jesus was the finest evangelist there has ever been. He is the One who came into our world to save us by his life and death; so all of us are dependent on his redeeming work. Without Jesus, there would be no gospel to proclaim, for he is the gospel, the evangel, himself. After his resurrection he sent his disciples out into the world to make the gospel known—to do the work of evangelism—and he promised to be with them as they fulfilled that task. This calling to make the gospel known is the task of believers and churches throughout this age until he comes again.
I think that every Christian believer would agree with each statement in the paragraph above. The challenging issues arise when we think about just how the individual Christian and each church is to do this work of evangelism. It is my deep conviction that Jesus himself is the best model for us. As we read the four Gospels we see Jesus reaching out to individuals like the Samaritan woman at the well, like Zacchaeus the tax collector, like Nicodemus the teacher of God’s Word, like the Roman centurion whose servant was dying. We also see Jesus sharing the gospel with groups of people, for example, the mixed group of sinners, tax collectors, Pharisees and teachers of the Law recorded for us in Luke 15. We see him proclaiming the good news about himself in the temple at the Feasts, and on many other occasions. Sometimes he preaches to great crowds.
In every setting Jesus is the model for us as we seek to learn how to make the gospel known in our time and in our lives. I invite you to join us for this class as we study many examples of the evangelistic work of Jesus and seek to learn from his example.
