Dr. Griggs joined the Covenant faculty in fall 2016 for a one-year appointment as adjunct professor of theology. In his new role, he will continue to teach many of the Seminary’s systematic theology courses while also serving as a full voting member of the faculty.
Dr. Griggs holds a PhD in New Testament from Durham University (England), an MDiv from Covenant Seminary, and a BA in philosophy and BS in finance from the University of Missouri-Columbia. His doctoral research focused on Paul’s theology of grace in Galatians in comparison with contemporary Jewish theologies of God as “giver.”
An expert in New Testament theology and early Jewish theology, Dr. Griggs has lectured or tutored on these and related subjects at Durham University and for the Lindisfarne Regional Training Partnership in North Shields, England. He has also presented many papers at scholarly conferences and seminars and is the author of “Apocalyptic Experience in the Theodicy of 4 Ezra,” in Evil in Second Temple Judaism and Early Christianity, edited by Chris Keith and Loren T. Stuckenbruck (Mohr Siebeck, 2016). Dr. Griggs previously served eight years as assistant pastor, senior associate pastor, and staff theologian at Central Presbyterian Church (EPC) in St. Louis, Missouri, and was an active member of various committees for his presbytery. He is a life-long Missouri resident, a St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan, and an avid supporter of Mizzou football and basketball. He and his wife, Jane-Ellis, have three boys.
Dr. Griggs commented on his appointment: “I am delighted to join the Covenant Seminary community as a faculty member. My time as a student at Covenant was one of the most formative experiences of my life, and so I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to join in the work of preparing students for lives of faithful service in Christ’s Kingdom.”
Dr. Mark Dalbey, president of Covenant Seminary, said, “We are very pleased with Dr. Griggs’s work with us over the past year and are excited to welcome him to a more permanent place on our faculty. Robbie’s experience, expertise, and heart for teaching and leading God’s people make him an excellent addition to our Covenant family. We look forward to seeing how God will use him in forming the lives of our students for ministry to his church and Kingdom.”
