Dr. Michael W. Goheen, director of theological education for the Missional Training Center (MTC)–Phoenix, will join the faculty of Covenant Theological Seminary as professor of missional theology on July 1, 2018. Dr. Goheen’s appointment was approved by the Seminary’s Board of Trustees at the board’s meeting in April. In addition to his ongoing directorial and teaching work with MTC—which became an extension site of Covenant last year—Dr. Goheen will teach occasional courses on mission-related topics at the Seminary.
Dr. Goheen began his professional life with seven years as a PCA church planter and pastor in the Toronto area. Then, for two decades, he taught worldview studies, biblical theology, and missiology at Dordt College, Redeemer University College, Trinity Western University, and Regent College. For most of that time, he has also held pastoral and preaching positions. In his new role with the Seminary, Dr. Goheen will continue to direct the theological education program at MTC, where he provides pastors and other current ministry leaders with deeper theological training in a non-traditional, mission-oriented educational setting.
He also serves as scholar-in-residence for Surge Network, a Phoenix-based church-leadership training network, and spends part of each year in Brazil and Hungary training pastoral leaders. Dr. Goheen has authored, co-authored, or edited ten books, including A Light to the Nations: The Missional Church and the Biblical Story (IVP, 2014), Introducing Christian Mission Today: Scripture, History, and Issues(Baker, 2011), and The Church and Its Vocation: Lesslie Newbigin’s Missional Ecclesiology (Baker, forthcoming, 2018). He and his wife, Marnie, have four married children and eleven grandchildren.
Of his appointment, Goheen says, “What drew me to Covenant Seminary was a common theological vision and a shared sense of what the church and its leadership should look like. We see mission as not what the church does, but what the church is—we are blessed to be a blessing for the sake of the nations by living and proclaiming the gospel in every area of life. I am excited about the opportunity to teach at Covenant and for our two organizations to work together to challenge and enrich one another.”
Dr. Mark Dalbey, president of Covenant Seminary, commented, “We are grateful for what the Lord has been doing through Dr. Goheen and his work with MTC and excited to have him on our faculty. We look forward to a long and fruitful ministry together as we seek to train servants of Christ who are biblically rooted, gospel-shaped, and Spirit-empowered to pursue God’s mission in a world that needs the grace and truth his Word provides.”
