Edinburgh

22-26 June, 2020

Edinburgh Summer School

UPDATE 27 March: Due to Covid-19 we are cancelling this summer’s Edinburgh Summer School. We are disappointed to not be able to offer these courses at this time, but we look forward to equipping you in seasons to come.

Covenant Theological Seminary is again partnering with the Chalmers Institute to deliver a week-long Summer School in Edinburgh that combines the best theological resources with application to the Church’s discipleship and mission. These courses will offer a unique opportunity to learn in the beautiful location of Edinburgh, Scotland.

This opportunity comes with the Summer School distinctive: learning in fellowship with instructors who embody what they teach and students who walk away transformed, serving Christ more faithfully wherever He has called them to be. Dr. David Chapman will offer the Theology/biblical studies track course, the Gospels. Dr. Tasha Chapman will lead the Discipleship and Mission track course, Resilient Ministry.

The result: students will gain a deeper understanding of who God is, how to understand the Bible, and how to flourish in ministry.

In partnership with

Course #1: Theology/Biblical Studies Track

Gospels

This class available for credit!

In this course we will conduct a study of the four Gospels’ form and content as a distinct body of literature with exegesis of key passages. The objective of this course is to promote lifelong learning, personal discipleship, and equipping others to make disciples of our Lord by:

  • Providing an overview of the major historical and theological contributions of each of the canonical Gospels.
  • Providing an introduction to the literary character of the canonical Gospels and their historical setting.
  • Discussion the literary-historical (inter)relationship among the canonical Gospels.
  • Modeling and promoting sound exegesis of select passages in the original language (MDiv students only; MA students will have alternate assignment)
  • Discussing issues of critical scholarship (e.g. historical Jesus studies, critical hermeneutical methods, NT canon, and extra-canonical Gospels) and modeling a sound approach to engaging fields of study.

This course is available for 3 hours of academic credit. If taking this course for credit, it will have both online and residential components. The entire course will run 18 May  – 21 August, starting and finishing online with attendance required June 22-26 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Instructor: Dr. David Chapman

Covenant Seminary welcomed Dr. Chapman to its full-time teaching staff in January of 2000. Professor Chapman worked for four years in college ministry with Campus Crusade for Christ, and he continues to be active in local and international church ministry and teaching. He has served since 2004 on the Board of Presbyterian Mission International (PMI), which assists international students studying at Covenant to return to full-time ministry in their home countries.

Dr. Chapman also serves as curator of the W. H. Mare Institute for Biblical and Archaeological Studies on Covenant Seminary’s campus. He regularly leads Covenant Seminary study tours of Israel, and he directed the Abila Archaeological Excavation (in northern Jordan) from 2004 to 2008.

He served as the NT editor (and contributor) for the ESV Archaeology Study Bible (Crossway, 2018). Some of his other publications include “1 Thessalonians” and “2 Thessalonians” for the ESV Expository Commentary (Crossway, 2018); The Trial and Crucifixion of Jesus: Texts and Commentary (with Eckhard Schnabel, Mohr Siebeck, 2015); Philippians: Rejoicing and Thanksgiving (Christian Focus, 2012); and Ancient Jewish and Christian Perceptions of Crucifixion (Mohr Siebeck, 2008). Dr. Chapman served as associate editor for New Testament Archaeology for the ESV Study Bible.

Course #2: Discipleship and Mission Track

Resilient Ministry

This class available for credit!

Why is vocational ministry uniquely challenging these days? Why do many ministry leaders leave the ministry? What can we do to pursue healthy, fruitful ministry work for a lifetime? We will explore research findings that begin to answer these questions and will practice exercises toward developing healthy habits of self-awareness, self and ministry assessment, reflection, communication, and leadership that can sustain us in ministry. Much of the course material comes from eight years of research on pastoral sustainability, published in two books by Bob Burns, Tasha Chapman, and Donald C. Guthrie. The five main themes concern spiritual growth, self-stewardship, emotional intelligence, marriage and family, and leadership.

This course is available for 1 hour of academic credit. If taking this course for credit attendance is required 22–26 June in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Instructor: Dr. Tasha Chapman

Tasha started teaching education courses and mentoring women at Covenant Seminary in 2002. Since then she has served with staff teams for Distance Education, Student Life, international students, the Doctor of Ministry program, the Center for Ministry Leadership, and Academic Administration.

Previous to coming to Covenant, she worked in campus ministry and then directed women’s ministry in a local church. She views educational ministry as the lifelong process of growing toward maturity in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit with the body of Christ. Her courses study relevant applications of current educational research, learning theories, and methods that can strengthen our ministries. Her current consulting and research focuses on leadership and self-stewardship in ministry, cross-cultural learning, and instructional and curriculum design. She co-authored The Politics of Ministry: Navigating Power Dynamics and Negotiating Interests (IVP, 2018) and Resilient Ministry: What Pastors Told Us About Surviving and Thriving (IVP, 2013), and contributed to the ESV Women’s Devotional Bible (Crossway, 2014).

Edinburgh Theological Seminary

The Venue

Edinburgh Theological Seminary is superbly located, right in the heart of Edinburgh, a city frequently labeled one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is surrounded by the quirky alleyways, city courtyards and cobbled streets that make up Edinburgh’s charming Old Town; and we have Edinburgh Castle, St. Giles Cathedral and the Writers’ Museum right on our doorstep. The capital boasts the largest collection of historic buildings, museums, art galleries and theatres of any city in Scotland.

Edinburgh Castle still dominates the skyline and is probably the best known and most visited of the historic buildings which surround our College – it is just a few hundred yards away. Right in the center of the city, Princes Street Gardens are the stunning view from the Seminary’s front windows. A few minutes walk from the Seminary is Holyrood Park, named after the adjacent Holyrood House, the Queen’s residence in the capital. It boasts a tiny loch, rocky crags and even an extinct volcano, Arthur’s Seat, which only takes about half an hour to climb and provides excellent views from the top. Below the crags lies the building of the Scottish Parliament. Indeed, one of the most attractive things about Edinburgh Theological Seminary is that almost everything is within walking distance.

Edinburgh also holds a rich Christian Heritage. Read an in depth history at https://www.christianheritageedinburgh.org.uk/.
