Who We Are

Our History, Heritage, and Hope

Excellence in Ministry Training for More Than 50 Years

Established in 1956, Covenant Theological Seminary was born out of a desire to maintain the integrity of God’s Word and to proclaim God’s truth in the face of accelerating unbelief. From humble beginnings (we had only 11 students back then), the Seminary has, by God’s grace, become one of the fastest growing evangelical seminaries in North America, with a reach and influence that now spreads around the world.

Committed to excellence in theological education from a Reformed perspective —and with a unique emphasis on the power of God’s grace to transform lives and motivate for ministry—Covenant Seminary has now been preparing pastors, church leaders, and lay people for service to the Lord for more than 50 years. We are humbled that the Lord has seen fit to bless our efforts in his name and to use this institution as an instrument for the expansion of his Kingdom. We pray that he will continue to grow us, not only in size, but in faith, as we seek to serve his purposes.

"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations      . . . teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you."

Matthew 28:19–20 (ESV)

The Seminary of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA)—and Beyond

In an age when independence is all the rage, we rejoice that Covenant Seminary is under the caring oversight of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). We are the only seminary whose Board of Trustees is elected by and submits to the governance of the PCA. The close relationship of our faculty and administration with our sponsoring denomination provides both accountability and direction in the training of students for ministry.

We praise God also that a large portion of our student body comes from denominations other than the PCA. Such students are an integral part of our Covenant Community, and we strive to assist them in special ways as they train for ministry in their own church bodies. Many of our graduates serve in a wide variety of churches and missions outside the PCA as well. We are grateful that with our church's blessing we are able to "salt" the world with scriptural truth through the witness of our graduates in this way, and we warmly invite applications from anyone seeking to study the Bible as God's authoritative, inspired, and inerrant Word.

Reaching the World with the Gospel of Grace

We are dedicated not only to preparing leaders for the church, but also to reaching the larger body of Christ and to unbelievers around the globe by providing easy access to a variety of free theological educational resources through our Worldwide Classroom. By his grace, God has in recent years opened for us new doors of opportunity to expand our influence for the gospel in this way.

Our Worldwide Classroom and Living Christ 360 ministries reach millions of people throughout the world who otherwise might not be able to hear the message of God’s amazing grace, or learn more about the redemptive work he has accomplished for us in Jesus Christ. Our hope—and our prayer—is that the Lord would use these ministries and this institution to further expand his Kingdom to the glory of his name.
