Dr. Peterson joined the faculty in 1990, having served as associate professor of systematic theology and New Testament at Biblical Theological Seminary for ten years. He has served as interim pastor of seven churches, including church plants, and has been to Uganda and Peru on teaching missions. His experience as a minister of the Gospel is reflected in the practical emphases in his systematic theology classes. He is also known for his daily lunches with students.
Dr. Peterson has written many articles, and his books include, most recently, Salvation Accomplished by the Son: The Work of Christ (Crossway, 2012), as well as Hell On Trial: The Case for Eternal Punishment; Getting to Know John’s Gospel: A Fresh Look at Its Main Ideas; Two Views of Hell: A Biblical and Theological Dialogue; Calvin and the Atonement; Adopted by God; Why I Am Not an Arminian (with colleague Michael Williams).
He has co-edited several books with Christopher W. Morgan, including Hell Under Fire; Faith Comes by Hearing: A Response to Inclusivism, and the Theology in Community Series for Crossway: Suffering and the Goodness of God; The Glory of God, The Deity of Christ, and The Kingdom of God; their volume Fallen: A Theology of Sin will be published in 2013 (volumes on Heaven and The Love of God are in process).
In addition, Dr. Peterson has co-edited Why We Belong: Evangelical Unity and Denominational Diversity with Anthony L. Chute and Christopher W. Morgan, due from Crossway in June 2013; and All for Jesus: A Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Covenant Theological Seminary, co-edited with Sean Michael Lucas (Christian Focus, 2006).
Dr. Peterson also edits the series Explorations in Biblical Theology for P&R Publishing, which thus far includes: Election and Free Will (by Robert A. He serves as editor for Presbyterion, Covenant Seminary’s academic journal.
Dr. Peterson and his wife, Mary Pat, have four children.
